A female reader, anonymous, writes (20 January 2010):

There are certain factors which mean you could get pregnant while on the pill, as listed here by other aunts.

But from your question it sounds to me like you don't actually know what the pills does. If this is the case you shouldn't be having sex. Contraception is basic sex education. Best to start there I think.

If the pill is used correctly it can be effective, but condoms still need to be used. For reason the previous reader wrote.

I have gotten pregnant while on the pill. And used it exactly as directed. I now have the implanon. See a GP for contraception advice and sex ed.

I'd like to point out the pill actually normally regulates your period not messes it up.

My boyfriend and I generally only use the pill as our major form of birth control and after hundreds of sexual encounters, no pregnancy!

If you are taking it correctly, aren't on anti-biotics, and not throwing up the pill / having it come out the other end....

then you are probably not pregnant.

That's what the pill does, it stops you getting pregnant. It also messes up your periods.

Good Luck!! xx

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 January 2010):

Very unlikely as long as you are taking the pill as described, and if you started taking recently there is a period of time that you need to use other protection...also if you take antibiotics, you will need to use protection as antibiotics lower the efficacy of the pill.

The main reason to use condoms while on the pill is to help protect you from STD's and if you had unprotected test before he was your boyfriend and vice versa, I think you both should be tested. Also, get the Gardasil vaccine for HPV virus which leads to cervical cancer.
