You should definitely join a gym, and if you have the $$$ it would be ideal to get a personal trainer to design a plan and help you with your workouts.
I noticed that you live in Britain.
I've heard of a chain of gyms called "Fitness First" over there... or something similar? You might look into those.
I pay about 20 USD for the gym I go to here in the USA and it's worth every penny.
Remember, though, you have to eat healthy in addition to exercising. Otherwise it won't work!

4 days a week interval cardiovascular exercise. Resistence training 3 times a week and regulate your diet to 2000 calories a day, with the right amount of protein, fat and carbohydrates.

What shows the "six pack" is having no fat on your middle whatsoever. Everyone pretty much has that six pack it is just a matter of stripping off the fat. It is really more about diet than anything.

There isn´t an exerisise that gets you abs. Your body doesn´t work that way. You could do a 1000 situps a day and they still wouldn´t show.
The only way to get abs to show is to reduce your bodyfat. You do that by:
1.healthy eating. Eat a lots of protein (chicken, fish, eggs, red meat, etc) veggies and fruits. Don't neglect the carbs either, but they can't be the bulk of your meal. Drink a lot of water as well and hold off on the alcohol.
2.Exersise:
- use free weights to increase your muscle mass so you don´t end up like a skinny guy. Join a gym and take a good look around. The fit guys and gals are pumping weights. The out of shape ones are working on machines and talking while they´re walking 1/mph on a threadmill. If you want to run, run outside.
- Set up a routine for yourself. For an instance: I train two hours a day. That may be too much for you, but you can start with 45 minutes: start with cardio intervals. After warmup, run as fast as you can for 1 minute, then walk 30 seconds, and build it up as you go. Be patient, in the beginning, this is pretty hard to do. After cardio, train with weights. Make whole movements and get someone to show you, so you don't get it wrong and injure yourself. Your local gym usually has Bodypump lessons with weights. Use those to get started.
Seriously a gym membership isn't expensive when you do it wisely. I pay 28 dollars per month and I go almost every day. A pretty good deal. It becomes a bad deal if you don't use it. Don't be afraid to invest money in yourself.
Good luck!
