he is in withdrawl, give it some time. if it gets really bad, his doctor will be able to help him relax and cope with the withdrawel symptoms. it may last several months yet, but it will end.

It really depends on how he copes with quitting these two things. If he was highly addicted then this will be an issue for quite sometime. Alternatively, he'll start again and things will go back to normal, or with time (everyone is different so can't say how long) he will lose his dependency and he'll be his old self agasin!
