However, he claims that when he sorts it out he can see us getting back together,

Now whenever we talk the conversation is much more awkward and it was nevr like that before,

I like him alot but I am stuck as to what to do,

Move on. It looks like he's using you and isn't fair on you to wait until he's finished with the things that he's got to sort out with his ex. Find someone who won't make you wait until everything sorted out and isn't involved with their ex. After all, you are only young.
