We've gotten very close...met the family already, gone on vacation together, and he tells me all the time how happy he is with me. A few days ago I said those 3 words..I love you...and he said I love you too! He said it back immediately and I could tell he really meant it. However its been a few days and I have said I love you once since the first time and he said I love you too...however he hasn't initiated saying I love you to me at ALL. This really hurts me and makes me feel like he doesn't really mean it. His behavior around me is the same it was he's not being distant at all...I just don't get why he doesn't say i love you to me. Is it possible he lied?

I have been with my bf for three years and even though I know he loves me he hardly ever initiates saying 'i love you'. In fact, I could probably count on two hands how many times he has initiated saying it haha.
I think in a relationship the woman is often the one that needs the reasurance so says 'i love you' to hear the man say it back. However men do not need the same anount of reasurance.
