 I think you have to be more forward to him, and ask him the same question you asked here.
You know that he likes you, and that is SUCH a great advantage to you because the most reason why people don't ask their crushes is because they fear rejection.
So you're past that, so why not do this? If he wants some time to recover from his last relationship, give it to him, but try to persist your interest to be in a relationship with him. Ask him often, until he says "yes".
