I visited my old school recently to catch up with some friends and to basically, see him since I didn't do so last time. It was really awkward, since I didn't know how to get a conversation going. I only asked him a few basic questions like "How are you now?" and his answers were quite short/abrupt, so our conversation basically ended in awkwardness. How should I get talking to him again? We text sometimes, though very little now and I still send him birthday presents... Should I still continue with the presents thing or just end? We were quite close and used to joke around, but we just don't do that anymore, and I don't really want things to end this way. So what do you guys think of this situation?

Sounds like he's got himself in a mood about something, maybe he wanted you to be his girlfriend and you've not been in touch since the summer so he feels rejected.
Ask him what's going on and talk about it.
If he won't tell you then cut contact and move on. It's not worth wasting time on someone who sulks.
I've been there and felt bad about them, and concluded that it's been a total waste of time as they are never worth it.
Good Luck!! xx
