He feels he needs to be there for his ex and I cant understand why he would want to do this.....

help!!!!!!im in a great relationship-i think? i have a wonderful boyfriend that was in a previous relationship with a lady that was 10 years older than him and on drugs. he loved her-she never loved him. we have been dating almost 7 months. she calls,texts and emails him atleast once a month, just to talk? whats up? i told him why do you want to stay in touch with someone who threw you away? he says he loves me, but out of respect feels he needs to be there for her when she needs him. im shocked and dont like it. she lives close to him. he also said since they split up, they havent seen each other. not sure what to do. kinda feel disrespected
