 Two wrongs don't make a right, and your example clearly illustrates this. First, James verbally abuses you, and then you physically abuse him, by hitting him. What kind of example are you setting for your little boy?
Is it worth giving the scaffolding guy, Jason, a chance? Nah. You need to sort things out with James first, whether you decide to end things or to seek counseling of some sort. Your poor little boy shouldn't have to witness cheating, on top of abuse and whatever else he's had to suffer through witnessing... Think of your child here, please!
