My (now-ex) boyfriend has had a really shitty final semester in college. His best friend ditched him, he thinks he's wasted four years, and he became very distant two months ago, even saying he wanted a break/space. I was devastated and tried to keep him and keep loving him, and he broke up with me a few days ago. A couple of days after that, he started calling me and emailing me constantly, not mentioning anything about "us" but just random funny things.

What is he doing?! We're long-distance, so that doesn't help, but we've been LD for nearly a year and it's only been the past couple of months that he's been distant. Does he just miss me as a friend and wants me around, or does he want to get back together???

A female reader, anonymous, writes (11 May 2006):

He is lonely and needs to connect with someone. Maybe he does regret breaking up with you, but you need to call him on it. Ask him why he keeps calling and emailing you. You need clarification because you can't be his "emotional crutch" whenever he decides he needs someone to lean on because he has no one else to talk to.
