Why should he need to ask you ?
If you are good friends the chances are that if you asked him and he didn't want to get that involved he would just say so and the both of you would move on. There is a chance he likes you too and is in the same boat.

when in a relationship, isnt it good to have your partner as your best friend? ive always believed that being that if you plan on forever then you need to know they will stick by your side thru thick and thin. but in your situation, you do have a lot to risk, if it dont work out. so its only a matter of taking that chance when you 'feel' it is right.
