A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey just a quick question regarding the contraceptive pill.

Im on the 21 day contraceptive pill yasmin, and on the NHS website, netdoctor, and the fpa (family planning association) and any other information websites on the yasmin pill all say that the pill information booklets are out of date, and give you the new information.

The information differs mainly on the missed pill section and the sickness and diarrhoea section. These websites claim if you miss one pill you are still protected, and even if you miss 2, where the pill leaflet says if you miss one pill you have to use extra protection. Also it says if you are sick it doesnt matter, its as if you missed a pill and that you are still protected, where the pill booklet says to use extra protection.

Im just wondering if this is true? As the fpa couldnt exactly put wrong information on there website as thats there job, to help people with contraceptive problems and to help stop unwanted pregnancys, also the NHS surely wouldnt be allowed to put wrong information on there website? Thanks in advance xx

A male reader, Mr Doctor United States +, writes (3 May 2010):

If you miss 1 dose of Yasmin, take it as soon as you remember. Take your next dose at the regular time. This means you may take 2 doses on the same day. you do not need to use a backup form of birth control if you only miss 1 pill. If you miss more than 1 dose, read the extra patient leaflet that comes with Yasmin or contact your doctor for instructions. You must use a backup form of birth control if you miss more than 1 dose. If you are not sure how to handle missed doses, use an extra form of birth control (e.g., condoms) until you talk with your doctor.

Been on Yasmin for 6 years,

The advice I follow is take the pill 21 days, 7 day break take on 8th day etc etc. however if you forget to take your pill at the time you were meant to take it long as you take it within 12 hours of that time your fine i.e. time 7pm if you take before 7am your fine, miss this then take pill for 7days with protection, if you Finnish a pack continue taking next pack with no break in between.

If you vomit or have diarrhoea within four hours of taking the pill just take another one.

The websites your visiting are not exactly the best for medicines advice, websites such as

or look at this web link.

I personally wouldn't risk having sex if I've missed a pill. After all the pill is only effective if the level of hormone in your blood remains consistent above a certain amount, this is why you take them everyday for 21 days as you are keeping a consistent level in your blood. this is important after you have a bleed as your hormone levels fall (hence the bleed) and when you start again on the 8th day you build the level up. the reason why you are protected for seven days during the bleed is because after you have taking the pill for 21 days the level of hormone is high above the minimum level of hormone needed. after 7 days the level drops but doesn't drop below the minimum level when you start up again. so obviously you miss a pill the level of hormone does not build up.

Imagine a car, your fuelling up for journey put just enough in there you are only covered for the journey, put more than enough in there and you are covered for a certain period before you are required to fill up.

A female reader, mervy Australia +, writes (3 May 2010):

mervy agony auntI think that a lot of the time, the leaflet is protecting itself in a worse case scenario (ie, let's say you miss 2 pills, in x% of cases, this will be fine but maybe in a really small percentage there is a risk of pregnancy, so to cover themselves, they say if you miss more than 1 use back up protection). For instance, when I started the pill, I got a really mixed review of when I could stop using back up protection. Some sources said that since I started on the day of my period, I was pretty much covered almost immediately. Other sources said wait a week. The leaflet said wait two weeks. Somewhere else said wait an entire month (ie a whole packets worth) until it was safe. So I think that in most cases one would be fine immediately, but obviously there have been a few where people have not been covered for a month. So, as Ebony said, follow the precautions to the best of your ability so you don't spend time worrying about yourself!

take care

mervy.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (3 May 2010):

It is not so much wrong information but the fact that the pill fact sheet has not been updated in a few years. I would go with what the NHS site say as they actually have the new information from the company that produces the pill even though they are too lazy to reprint the fact sheet.

EbonyBlossom agony auntThe NHS website would not publish anything deemed to be incorrect. However, if pregnancy is not a risk you can afford to take, then follow the precautions in the packet purely for your own peace of mind =]
