A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I've just been put on the pill, cerazette. Thing is, I went round my friends last night and all of them said how they would avoid that pill because of the side effects and you experience really bad depression and gain so much weight and all these other bad things. Well I figured to be smart and look up the reviews on this pill and the results were shocking! So many people, pretty much every site i looked on (lots) said they had bad depression and suicidal thoughts, severe headaches and pain, they bled for so many days and sometimes their periods just stopped for months.

My worry is it sounds like terrible pill to be on and I don't want my family to know i'm on it, so the moods swings I was fine and figured would be normal... but what those people described will be obvious something is wrong (which my mum will notice i must be on the pill) and I don't want to feel like that, it sounds so bad!! Everyone has said avoid it, even my friends and I don't want to start it and see if i react any different I just want to change the pill!

Thing is, I don't know if doctors allow you to chose which pill to go on since i want to go on yasmin, the same as my friends and my sisters. But am I being stupid, would a doctor let you do this if you haven't tried the one they described.... and do you guys think i should try it out first, has anybody used Cerazette before?

I have heard from other people who used cerazette that it is good, I think it is a pill you take continuously, if its the one Im thinking of then it is supposed to stop you having periods which is brilliant for people who have trouble with theirs every month. I have been on numerous pills, I would say give it a go for say 3 months and see how you get on with it. if it was as bad as your friends say it wouldnt be on the market. I am on yasmin and I find it brilliant for my acne, oily skin & of course regulating periods as I used to get mine anywhere between every 1 and 6 weeks before. the only pills I have heard of there being numerous problems with are microgyn and yasminelle. good luck.

person12345 agony auntStay on it for awhile, I highly doubt it will make you have uncontrollable mood swings and depression. Give it a few months. Every pill has similar numbers of people experiencing the same bad side effects. When you look it up online ALL of them have hundreds-thousands of women posting about how awful the weight gain, mood swings, breast pain, spotting, nausea, headaches, etc... are. Try it, look up any pill. They all will have those HORRENDOUS reviews. In fact so will pretty much all prescription drugs. Reviews for prescription drugs are often useless, just a forum for people to complain about their side effects when really, they should be talking to their doctors.

Same with both IUDs, Implanon, and the Depo shot. The people who are happy with their pill don't notice it and don't go online about it. The people who had some kind of awful side effects feel compelled to do so. I had one pill that made me feel HORRIBLE (it's not important which it was, I don't want you to avoid it because of that). My friend was on it for 4 years and loved it. Every woman responds differently. One of my friends has implanon and loves it, one of my friends was not a fan. Curiously, I know four or five people with the Mirena IUD and they all LOVE it. One had it placed, then broke up with her boyfriend and started dating women exclusively, and she left it in anyways because she liked the acne-clearing and the eliminated periods.

Yasmin, Yaz, and Ocella are under investigation right now for an increased blood clot risk, so I'd stay away from those until that's done.

k_c100 agony auntIf you went back to the doctor without even trying it then they wont let you change I'm afraid. If you wanted Yasmin (that's what I use) then you should have told the doctor when you went the first time.

I think you need to accept you are stuck with this for now, and see how it goes. Everyone reacts differently to different pills, some people dont get on with Yasmin at all - my best friend went on it and hated it, she was moody, bleeding throughout the month etc so even that pill can have nasty side effects! If you google any pill, you will find lots of scare stories and people who didnt like it. But you have never tried it before, so you dont know how its going to react with your body, so just give it a try.

I have tried Cerazette before, I came off it but I honestly cant remember why! It wasnt anything drastic, I have tried loads of pills in my time so I was probably just experimenting.

Give this pill a go, see what happens and if you really dont get on with it then go back to the Dr's.

I hope this helps and good luck!
