I did... no it did not work out. As Frank said, if what broke you up is still there, there is a big possibility you will break up again.
Other than that... trying never hurt anyone!

I worked on myself and got back my ex-fiance after 7 years apart...I had changed, but our dynamic was still the same. I am a firm believer that unless what broke you up the first time has been completely eliminated, you will break up again.
For example, a person that was an addict that gets sober may have a chance of building a lost relationship, but the odds are against it, even in the best of circumstances.
It really depends on what caused the break up in the first place.
