Had an abortion three years ago. Did this affect my chances of conceiving now?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I had an abortion 3 years ago when I was 16.

I was too young to be a mum and knew I couldn't look after a child so that's why I went through with it. That was with my ex boyfriend.

Now at 19 and with a new man I want to try for a baby.

However, when I had that abortion I had it the medical way(involving tablets) after 12 hours the nurse said it hadn't came out yet and the doctor wanted to check me. As she did a searing pain ripped through me and I was wondering if that could be one of the reasons I cant concieve now? We hevn't used condoms in a year and I stopped taking the pill 10 months ago.

I also went to get checked at a gum clinic incase there is anything else wrong but the tests wont come back for three weeks..

If anyone can help me at all.. all advice/ help appreciated

xx

I am happy to hear about your results and yes, the idea of house hunting and planning and preparing before having the baby tells me you are level headed and thinking in the right direction.

Well done, and best of luck!

Thanks for all your answers!! I got my test results back yesterday - All fine and dandy!! I still would really like to try for a baby and I know my partner does aswell BUT I think we might start house hunting first and then we can have everything ready for if we do have a child!!

Thanks for your help

In my opinion ages 16 and 19 aren't that different. You are still too young to want to "TRY" for a child, especially if you aren't married, you only have a BF!

You have your whole life ahead of you. You should be worrying about college and someday marriage. You can not even begin to understand the responsability of raising a child - nothing mentally can prepare you for that kind of responsability.

Good luck to you in what ever decision you decide to make but I wish someone would have told me what I'm telling you.

Try not to worry. Abortions affect a small number of women I think, but try not to worry until your tests come back, you will not know till then. Good Luck Hunny. I hope to hear how you got on with you tests.

There should be no reason why you cannot concieve, but best will be to wait for your medical results. I also suggest you use the time thinking about this decision to have a baby very carefully, as you are very young and raising a child is a huge responsability.
