Goths, Emo's, Chavs, what's the point of all this labeling?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, vamp-gal writes:

Hey,

Okay, basically, people like to label people, but why do they take it so far?

Goths: They are supposed to be depressed, they wear black, and people don't like them because they are either different or they think that because they wear black or whatever, they love to cause trouble.

Emo's: They are supposed to slit their wrists, and love blood, and do the same as goths, but are worse.

Chavs: They are supposed to cause trouble, go around with knives, love to use words like 'init' and 'bruv' and stuff like that, drinking on a park bench, at 12am.

To be honest, I don't get why we are labeled in the first place. We are all different and all act differently to one another, and all have different thoughts, style and taste to other people.

Goths aren't always depressed, you can actually find some really happy goths sometimes. If you wear black though, lately, you are instantly labeled as 'emo' and you have to hold up your wrists as proof you don't do stuff like that.

But, apparently emos do it for attention, when there could actually be something wrong that's going on, and it's the only way they can deal with it.

I don't get why, people can't just be themselves without having to be constantly labeled, like, people can ask me, 'what are you?' and I usually reply with 'I like gothic things, but I'm not a goth, but also like girly things' it's just like, I don't want to just be a goth, or just be girly, I have different sides to me, and I'm sure other people do too.

Why are people labeled? That is my question. Why do people have to be labeled, if it's a way of people knowing what you like, fine. But people may like more than one style. Also, people may take it too far, and actually INSULT you for liking something. Like my friend, she was wearing black and everything, and she got eggs thrown at her!! And a while back, some people actually got beaten up because they were goths, one got put in intensive care, and one was killed. That's not right.

But it's not just goths and emos, I have been focusing on them, because, that's what I have heard, but I'm sure people who are labeled as 'chavs' or something like that, have had their fair share of abuse too.

Why can't we all just live our lives, liking what we like, and disliking what we don't without insulting people, 'because it's not the same as us so we can't accept it', and just be ourselves.

Is it just too simple for us?

Sorry this is long, but I feel that it is true, people today, get labeled.

Like, teenagers, they get labeled as going out at night, vandalizing and killing, and it's labeled like that for all teenagers, when it's obvious, people say that our generation have no respect, when some actually do still have respect for their parents and anyone else who will treat them with it, and won't go around beating someone up, for a little disagreement.

Again, sorry it is so long, but is this really what the world has come too? Labeling? segregation from others because they're not the same as you? Treating others differently because 'it's not normal'?

Thanks for all those who have taken the time to read this, I would really like to hear peoples opinions.

Yeah, good on you. I totally agree with you here, why should we be labelled, but i suppose its part of the "system". Let me tell i have a long fringe ( i am a guy btw) which looks similar, but not meant to be, an emo fringe. Why do i get called emo just because my hair is a bit longer than it should be.

Short hair = Not Emo

Long = Emo

But its only hair.

I hate the way the human system works let me add.

Thanks for this post.

vamp-gal agony auntXxAnGelXxx: I completly agree with you. We feel comfortable when we are with people who are like ourselves. But, like you, I don't think it's right that we are labeled, because we all have different aspects to our personalities.

Yeah, I agree, loads of people think it's cool to just go around and be the same as everyone else, just because they want to fit in with that certain group.

It probably will get worse, because, for some reason, people seem to hate it when people aren't like them.

Yeah, I don't know what to classify myself as, because I like gothic things, however, there are times, where I can go a bit girly, so I don't know what to call myself. Me and my friend have come up with names for ourselves, because we fit into more than one catagory. Lol.

Exactly, we all have different styles, and as long as your comfortable with yourself, that's all that should matter. It's your life to live, not someone elses.

Great hearing your opinion! :D Awesome to hear someone else has the same views as myself lol :D

XxAnGelXxx agony auntIt is completely stupid how people get labeled and put into groups, but I guess its just all conformity to the social norm of groups of people. It just goes to show how everyone (nearly) has practically become a sheep, following their herd. I dont ever think its gonna change, if anything I can imagine it only gettin worse. I hate all these stereotypes, personally, myself, in my pic I look really goth, and my appearance does look that way alot of the time, but that doesn't mean I worship satan, (although I dont believe in god) I dont go out and sit in graveyards at midnight conjuring spirits, im just a normal person with my own sense of style, how I feel comfortable :)

vamp-gal agony auntHeyy,

Thanks for all of your answers! :D

britt429: Yeah, I agree, it is really sad, people should be who they want to be, and, it seems like they're being punished for it, it's not right, everyone has the right to be who they want to be, and not have other people bring them down because of it.

Petina1: Yeah, it would be boring if we were all the same, but I agree, humans find something they have in common with someone, and they stick together, it's cool, because obviously you are friends with people who you have stuff in common with, but it's also bad, in my opinion, because then it's like, you are segregating yourself from everyone else. But I agree with you. Haha, yeah, that does make you think :D.

I would hate to be the same as everyone else, I'd just like to be my own person, it's my life to live the way I want to live, I don't see why anyone else should get involved with that. Society is turning into a bunch of clones anyway, I think, everyone is obbsessed with being the same as everyone else, because they think it's cool, and to be the same, means they fit in, I think I'd rather be my own person, even if that means standing out from the crowd..

Shade'sGirl: Yeah, we do, we automatically group people, but it's not right, because when we group people and they do something 'out of character' then we pick up on it, and hate them for it, because they are being different from what we thought they were. I agree, it's what people do, and I agree, we should be who we are, without worrying about other people, and being grouped.

Dj 2009: Yeah, some people do, it for attention, they think it will make them look 'cool' in front of their mates, or something like that, or they do it to fit in with the rest of the crowd.

JessicaCupid: Yeah, I agree, we can't all be the same, it's not only boring, but it's not right, what I'm saying is, why can't people respect each other, and what they like? Everyone is different, but some people seem to hate that, and even go as far as to bully someone about it.

lilbubbles: I have left you until last, because I have a very strong opinion on what you have said..Because this is EXACTLY what I'm talking about!! Why would you (both) get into a fight with eachother, because you're different from one another? If you ask me, it's not only goths/emos who try and make people fear people, look at a load of others (who aren't), who carry knives, and guns, making people scared for their lives, you can't stereotype people like that, it's WRONG!.

And have you ever tried to look deeper than what's on the surface? People may be depressed because of something serious going on in their lives, or maybe they don't have a social life because of it, not everything is always as it seems, so why judge people on assumptions.

'Get on with your sad little lives', I think the only thing that's sad, is going around, being in fights, because they're different, you may disagree, but this is my opinion, and that's that. You may have gotten into a fight for a completly different reason, but this is what it comes down too, DIFFERENCES!

I'm sorry if it seems I'm being too harsh, or something like that, your opinon is your opinion, and I respect that, but everyone is different, and you can't tell people to 'Get on with their sad little lives' because to some, it's offensive, and can hurt, deeper than you may mean it to be, you can't get into fights with someone because they're different, why would you want to? Everyone is different and have their own opinions, and style, music taste, why would you want to take that away from them? Why would you want to make them feel as if it is wrong to be different and seperate from the crowd? Just curious.

Anyway, thanks to all of those who have answered, it's been a big help in understanding all of this, even though I still don't quite understand it, or even agree with it, it's been a huge help, in helping me understand further, than what I understood before. Thanks again.

JessicaCupid agony auntWe cant all be the same. Its like all the different religions! Sometimes people turn emo/chav etc. because there friends do or they 'just want to try it'

Wouldnt it be boring if there wasnt a mixture of different people.

I have an emo friend. She is just like me, just thinks a little differently

lilbubbles agony aunti recently got into a fihght with an emo girl who was in 9 grade and im in 7. they have nothing better to do then try to make people fear them and make total asses out of themselves. the only reason they are depressed is because they have no social life because of the way they act. a message to all emos: GET ON WITH YOUR SAD LITTLE LIVES!

A female reader, Shade'sGirl United States +, writes (7 December 2008):

The human brain naturally sorts things into groups and humans are no different. We see simularities in people are relate them. It's stupid and pointless but a natural thing in all honesty.

Don't let yourself be grouped; dress how you want, act how you want. If they dont like it, then that's their problem.

Don't pay any heed to people who group others, though on first glance i guarentee you do it too! It's a brain function really and grouping people just make it worse! So ignore those who call you emo or goth or whatever, just be yourself and soon everyone will do the same

It's just an easier way to stereotype people really, natural but once you get out of the teenage years it fades a bit so people will eventually mature out of it

Hope my opinion has helped

A female reader, petina1 United Kingdom +, writes (6 December 2008):

petina1 agony auntIf we all dressed the same, yes it would be boring, but someone out there would find some group to be in, like 'the brown eyed, group, or the blue eyed group'. Must be human nature , certain groups stick together, like lions, and tigers. I think at some point in the distant future when cloning is in it's full element we will definately be all the same, CLONES. Then surely we couldnt argue about anything then. My dad used to have a theory about different cultures mixing, he said one day we won't be different colours, we will all be yellow. Now there's a thought.

A reader, anonymous, writes (6 December 2008):

Labels have been used since the beginning of time. I haven't heard of most of those terms, except Goth of course, but I'm American and I'm from a different generation! But I know here there are terms like Jocs, Preppies, Druggies, etc. And back in my day there were hippies, hoods, druggies, yuppies, on and on and on.

I agree, labels can hurt. Especially at a young age when a person is still discovering who they are. It's all stereotyping and very unfair. It's best to just let it slide and continue to find yourself.

It's very sad to think a person could be murder for their individuality. But then there are those people who imfamize the labels...like the Columnbine Shootings here in the states. It's terrible, and such a waste of human life! I don't know what the answer to question is, I wish I did...all I can say is...Live and Let Live!

But unfortunately, some people just refuse to do that.

What a peaceful world it would be if it was like that!
