Well most of the way home was fine, on a dual carriageway doing 70mph…fine.Well on the road between Dundee and Aberdeen there are many speed cameras but that didn’t bother me as I was going between 65 and 70 the whole way, therefore not speeding. But I forgot there was an area which the speed limit changes to 50 as there’s a junction where you can turn left or right or something…I’m never on that road (once a year kinda thing) Anyways usually there is a sign that flashes saying 50 and that’s when I remember and then slow down but last night the sign was not flashing and I remained going 70mph and the camera flashed. It was 1am, I was the only person on the road, I never normally speed and did not think I even was speeding. Anyone know if there is a chance I’ll get away with this or what my penalty will be? I’m really worried about it. Reply to this Question Share |

I can assure you that this is very much still a 50mph zone.I have also been caught speeding (52 in a 40) on a different stretch of road on the A90 shortly after I passed my test (in 2008) as I forgot the speed limit changed from a 70 to a 40. Your penalty will be a 60 pound fine and 3 points on your license. It is 95% likely that you will get your letter and points through HOWEVER there is a very small chance that there was no film in the camera..you still get a flash but no photo is taken. Like I said, this is very unlikely so please do not get your hopes up. The letter usually comes within two weeks, mine came in the post on the last morning of the two week timeframe...gutted. Although it might be slightly longer given the time of year.Another thing, if it does come through and you do get your penalty points then please make sure you declare immediately it with your car insurer. Sure the premium will go up but you don't want it to void your insurance if you need to make a claim in the future.Fingers crossed for you!

I have been caught by a camera van before. Luckily, my penalty was a speed awareness course for £90 and with that you get no points. The speed awareness course depends on what county you are driving in and whether they allow courses.
The usual speeding penalty is £60 and 3 points on your license. If you have been driving for less than 2 years, you can only get 6 points and then your license is automatically revoked. If over 2 years it is 12 points.
I hope this helps, no idea how you could ever get out of it.

Are you sure the speed limit hasn't changed on that particular stretch of road since previous years? (If there's been some remodelling of the road layout etc)
Are you sure that the speed limit there doesn't get taken out of effect after a certain time because its less busy?
Don't panic too much. Only a handful of speed cameras on british roads are actually active anyway, the rest are just decoys. You should have noticed a flash in your rear view mirror if you've been caught out by a real camera.
If you have been caught out though, and you haven't got any previous driving offences (not to mention the speed sign may have been broken too) you could just get a fine (without points on your licence) or even simply a warning to be aware of the limits in future, even if there's no sign reminding you.

Why do you think you could get away with it? You were speeding and flashed!
You will get a letter through the post with a fine and saying you have 3 points on your licence.

well don't know about UK but here when a speed camera flashes you got caught and in about two weeks, the owner of the car gets a letter saying you owe the fine.
there are no points assessed to the owner or driver... speed cameras here are a way to make money not punish the driver with points.

Well if the camera flashed you havent got away with it! You have been caught speeding, and you were going 20mph over the limit so not one that the police might let you off for. Within 5mph of the limit is sometimes let off, definitely not 20mph!
Official info from the government can be found here - https://www.gov.uk/speeding-penalties
If you look for more info through the link on that site it takes you to cps.gov.uk, and their tolerances for a 50mph road are as follows:
Speed limit: 50 mph
ACPO charging threshold: 57 mph
Summons: 76 mph
So you are lucky it was just 70mph, another 6mph and you would be going to court! So you should get the standard £60 fine and 3 points on your license.
Just wait and see what comes through the post over the next 2 weeks, I dobut it will be more than £60 though.
Hope this helps.
