In the UK, shoplifting is usually a fine. Not sure about USA. It will be on your record though. I shouldn't think you'll be looking at jail for it

Caps = shoutingYour claim that you needed stuff and didn't have any money sounds as if your trying to rationalize your actions.Fact- if you shoplifted, you broke the law, should be prosecuted and should own your actions. You did the crime, now put on your big girl drawers and own it.you need to do whatever it takes to make this go away. 100+ hours of community service... go for it... don't get all attitude with the judge. Apologize to the store, offer to make restitution- the world doesn't owe you anything when you get out of line.

If you didn't want it on your record, I guess you shouldn't have stolen the stuff huh?As far as not messing your life up, if you behave from here on out and are up front with future employers about your mistake, *most* places will probably still hire you.
