But in a month I will go to France on exchange and he will go to England for Masters. We discussed this, and we both don't think a long distance relationship is feasible. He broke up with his ex because of long distance, and I'm afraid if we try it, it might not end well. We're considering to "build off" the relationship and become friends instead. Is this workable? We thought we could probably decrease the touching and physical side and try to chat more, help each other with academic pursuits, etc.

it's really hard to go from lovers to friends because of distance...
I doubt you will feel great the first time you realize that he's set his eye on a new girl.... and the same goes for him....
I would think that leaving it the way it is but saying that you are now free to date others is the better way to go.. or to just break up and wish each other well and move on....

And without one of you holding too much hope of rekindling in the future, it will be successful. And then, when/if you both return to your country - maybe things will work out for you then?
