not sure about covering them up but to get rid of spots and prevent new ones you should use black mud from the dead sea. use an exfoliator on your face every morning and night and wash it with black mud soap, once a week use the black mud from the dead sea face mask. i suffered from really bad acne for about 12 years. seriously you could hardly fit a pin in between my spots. then i discovered this stuff and it completely cleared in about 3 weeks. GOD. SEND! xxx

A female reader, anonymous, writes (26 January 2007):

acne is caused by a clogging of your pores. it can be due to over-production of sebum (the oil that makes your face shiny and your hair look greasy), a lack of exfoliation (dead skin cells hanging around too long), or both, among other things. there are often bacteria in the pores that lead to the painful, cyst-like pimples that never seem to fully go away.

make-up can do wonders with your look from a distance, but up close and personal, no amount of camouflage is going to hide the bumps. so the first thing you want to do is stop the acne. my advice would be to see your dr, b/c they can prescribe you the right thing for your situation. toothpaste will sometimes make a pimple look smaller overnight, b/c it dries it out. if you're only getting the occasional zit, that's fine, but if you have a real problem w/ acne, that's probably doing more harm than good. same with washing your face super frequently - it just causes your skin to produce more oils, leading to more clogged poors.

**** SO: To prevent new pimples and do the best you can at hiding the ones you've got:

1. wash your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning. dove sensitive skin is a good choice and what my dermatologist recommended. you can use a medicated cleanser in the evening; in the morning, use something light.

2. pat your face dry. look at your skin. is it moist? or is it dry and tense? imperfections are easier to conceal if your skin is well moisturized. if you live in a cold climate, it probably isn't in winter, unless you're young enough that it's still pretty oily. clinique has a good moisturizer if you need one (it's part of their 3-step cleansing system, which is pretty good).

3. start with a foundation primer. my guess is you've got a fair amount of redness in your skin. smashbox makes a green-tinted foundation primer that will mute the redness (i know, sounds weird, but the colors cancel each other out) and lets your foundation go on super smooth. you can get it at sephora, or online.

4. for a foundation, clinique superfit is pretty good. benefit also has some great foundations - you can get them at macy's, or at sephora. nars has a great stick foundation that would work well for you if you're in a hurry. the most important thing is to get the right COLOR foundation. it needs to match your skin perfectly. you'll use a concealer that's just a TINY bit darker to get great coverage.

5. use a good quality applicator, and make sure to keep it clean. most make-up companies are selling their own foundation brushes these days. i'm not sure there's a huge difference, as long as you keep them clean. sponges waste more product and are more likely to harbor germs, so you're probably best to stick with a brush.

6. benefit has a treatment concealer that contains salycilic acid (the same stuff in clean&clear, for example), which you use ONLY to cover zits (don't go using it for undereye circles or freckles). the salycilic acid dries out the pimple, while the concealer covers it. Laura Mercier has a very powerful concealer, but you might test it before making an investment - it's pricey, and people with sensitive skin are sometimes allergic to things in laura mercier, i've found.

7. after doing the foundation and concealer, take a loose powder and PRESS it onto your face to set everything (don't use a brush--use the powder puff).

8. do the rest of your makeup to draw attention away from the zits. if you tend to get them on your chin, try making your lips really stand-out -- use a stain + gloss, for example. people will be so focused on your lips that they won't be looking at your chin.

the most important thing is color. none of this will work if the stuff doesn't match your skin tone. also, the quality of cosmetics really does make a difference, and it's usually correlated with price. sad but true. if you're looking for a good coverage alternative on the cheap, i'd recommend L'oreal. they have the best quality stuff in the drugstores. but if you can at all afford it, go to a make-up counter in a dept store, or better yet, sephora, and give yourself a chance to actually try a variety of different shades. you'll be amazed at the difference it makes.

one last thing. diet (like eating chocolate) hasn't been shown to cause acne, but your overall nutrition does affect your general health, and that has a major impact on how your skin, hair and nails all look. (this is coming from someone who has terrible eating habits but is very vain - trust me; i've looked into it)

Good luck!!!

cd206 agony auntHi. I find a nightly routine of cleansing and using a spot buster cream on the big spots is the best thing. Do you know that before you put on foundation you should put an oil free moisturiser onto your face? I didn't find that out until I was seventeen and had spent years with patchy skin. It might benefit you as well to buy a concealer for covering up individual spots. I can't recommend one without seeing your skin tone but here in the UK you can get make up selection help in Boots and if you're in a different country I'm sure your local drugstore will be able to give you some help choosing. Make sure your moisturiser and foundation are oil free. Hope this helps.

Hi, diet does not cause pimples, it is caused by clogged oil glands around a hair follicle and a build up of cells and bacteria.

The best thing to do for this is to wash with a benzol peroxide wash, and to apply benzol peroxide cream directly to your blemishes twice a day after washing your face.

Do not scub or over wash your face as this causes irritation and can actually make your blemishes worse. For daily cleansing after your skin gets a bit clearer I like Aveeno Foaming Skin Cleanser with soy and salycilic acid or the clear skin version of this foaming cleanser, it is gentle enough for everyday use, removes makeup well and keeps blackheads from forming on my skin.

A good concealer that blends well and has drying agents in it will wear under or over makeup is Neutrogena Concealer, comes in a tube with an applicator tip...a little goes a long way, so use sparingly.

A makeup with heavy converage in Estee Lauder Double Wear Makeup, it stays on for hours, gives flawless finish, but is a bit heavy if most of your skin is healthy, you may just want to use it as coverage on your spots and blend with your regular makeup....but it is great natural looking coverage for a full coverage foundation....choose a shade that matches closely to your skin. I like Lancome Photogenic Powder to go over any foudation you are wearing, great stuff!

If using the benzol peroxide wash and cream does not do it for you, see a dermatologist for perscription strength benzol and or some oral antibiotics.

Another new product out that seems to be quite good is ACNE FREE and can be found at Walmart, it is a kit, benzol peroxide wash, a face cream with quoinie in it to fade dark spots and help heal sores, and then a sunscreen with vitamins in it to protect your skin from the elements, you should always wear a good suncreen even if you are wearing makeup or even indoors most of the time....it is the ONLY way to protect your skin from wrinkles caused by sun damage.

stina agony auntOh, I forgot to mention - make sure that the make-up you are using either says "noncomedogenic" or "will not clog pores" on the bottle. If it doesn't, then something in the make-up might be causing you to break out. And make sure you drink a good amount of water during the day to keep your system "clean." :)

stina agony auntHi there,

There have been other questions like the one you've posted, so you might want to take a minute and see what the other responses have been. Here's one link, but if you use the search bar, you can find more:

http://www.dearcupid.org/question/how-can-i-get-rid-of-my-spots.html

Also, I know that the Body Shop has a line of skin care products that are made for skin prone to blemishes. If you go to their website, http://thebodyshop.com, click on "Tea Tree" in the "Shop by Line" pull down menu, you'll see a bunch of soaps, masks, etc. Tea tree oil is a natural astringent, antiseptic, etc. Here's some info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_Tree_Oil_(Melaleuca_Oil)

I also think Arbonne has a great set for controling blemishes - they even sell vitamins in their set so that you can work not only on the outside face itself, but also from the inside out. (See the link to the other DC post for more info).

Hope this helps! Take care.

A female reader, sexseahot United States +, writes (25 January 2007):

sexseahot agony auntThere is a great acne treatment you can get from Mary Kay and also a Blemish control treatment to go with that. They also have medium coverage foundation that just blends everything on your face together. That would be my best guess since those products are better than what you can get at a department store and what not.

Best of Luck!!!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (25 January 2007):

hey, this may sound gross, but normal white toothpaste is a good remedy for pimples. As for covering them up, make sure you invest in a good concealer. Don't waste money on some cheap concealer at the supermarket as they ware off very quickly and be sure to pick one right for your skin tone. Also, the reason your pimples may appear worse when you try to cover them up could possibly be as of your appliance of the concealer. I usually put a little bit of concealer on the tip of my middle finger and dab it lightly on the area affected. Hmm, as for what you could be eating, any sugary foods i guess if you are eating them? Hope this helps!
