My girlfriend lost her license for five years. We have been dating for eight months. We both have children and we live about 45 miles apart. How would you handle this situation?

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntAssuming that you and she continue to see each-other... there's a two-part "answer" to this:

1. For her getting about locally, leave it up to her to do whatever she would have done if she never knew you, and,

2. You can/should take it upon yourself to drive to visit her - however often you do so - and, of course, you'll be the means of getting about when you and she DO get together....

Good luck...

YouWish agony auntHold on a second. Why did she lose her license for five years? I just looked up in different states reasons for a revocation of that length, and they all were for pretty serious and/or repeat offenses, usually hinging around DUI's or drug violations or multiple moving violations (usually more than 15 convictions within a 5 year period).

I think you should put aside the logistics of how a 45 minute drive will affect things, and do some hard thinking about the reason this 5 year suspension was levied. There are character warning signs out there, and I will tell you this directly -- if you have children (I'm thinking you both have children of your own from past relationships and not children together?) and this suspension was over drugs, you have a responsibility to your kids' safety above everything else.

Make a SMART choice about who you let into your kids' life. This long of a suspension isn't for driving 10 mph over the speed limit.

Cole Turner agony auntIt's time for you to step up to the plate ... do you drive? if so you need to give her a little extra support through this ... she will know that whatever she did to lose her licence was bad and is need of help! 45miles is a little distance but not so huge, if you handle this situation right and really support her ... it will go along way towards a positive future together!
