Being an ear care nurse I have had to deal with many people who have used q tips and made the problem much worse as the q tip pushes thewax further down and makes it much more difficlut to remove. As mentioned syringing is becoming a thing of the past due to the risks of perforations etc. and from my own experince many of the drops you get from the chemist are quite caustic to the ear make the wax very soggy and the ear often becomes quite inflammed and then prone to infection.
Olive oil is the best perhaps used every two to three weeks for a few nights it makes the wax softer but is not caustic to the ear and in most cases the wax will loosen and fall out.
As has already been said for those most diffcult of ears there are private clinics using microsuction proven to be the safest method these days however these are few and far between in our area stoke n trent there is a local clinic in endon for any one interested the number is 01782 505666.
But never put any instrument in your own ear to clean them it is very dangerous.

I just had mine sorted out today, and was so chuffed that i thought i'd share the solution!
I had been to the local NHS GP who informed me that they don't syringe ears any more as it is potentially dangerous (ie. they are scared of being sued if they do it wrong). I was perscribed ear drops and told it should soften up the wax plug and "hopefully" it will sort itself out after a week or three! or maybe even longer!!
After 3 days of near deafness i managed to find a specialist clinic in London who promptly removed all of it in a 15 min session using a tiny suction pump. Painless and safe, though i had to pay £40 for the treatment (a bargain if you ask me). The specialist told me that with the amount of impaction i had it would never have worked with just drops and would have quickly got infected if i'd left it!!
FYI Was also told that ear candles are useless and after you've used them, what looks like ear wax actually isn't and you'll see the same effect burning them in a glass!
Anyway, hope that helps!

If there is a lot then using a q-tip may r may not work if it doesnt it will just force the wax in farther making it worse. Hope that helps

My step dad says doctors dont like syringing though, it can damage the ear? so he doesnt want me to do it.. Do you know if its dangerous at all? and thanks for your answers

I would pop along to the doctors and see the nurse and she will syringe them for you. But before you go loosen the wax with some olive oil, or ear wax remover first.
Its actually a nice sensation having them syringed, and after your hearing will be alot better too.
Good luck

All the doctors are recommending olive oil nowadays. I have the same problem as you... I wash my ears twice daily but still get wax blockage. They used to give me regular syringe treatments but they won't now unless you try the olive oil remedy for three weeks and it makes no difference. Personally, I also find otex ear drops, available at the pharmacy to be a great help but read the label since they're strong and you can't use them for long. Try to olive oil first though.

reader, anonymous, writes (9 June 2007): A great home remedy is to put olive oil (cooking oil) into your ear just the same as you do with ear drops. This softens the wax and helps your body naturally get rid of the wax. This is perfectly safe my doctor recommended it to me for the same problem.

There is a product that you can buy at your local market. It will break the wax down into a liquid...
