I'm thinking it could have been due to lack of food? I'd only eaten once which was breakfast at 8, I fainted around half 12. Now I know that it seems like a silly amount of time to go without food but I had a bigger breakfast than I usually have (I had 3 pieces of toast this morning but only had 1 yesterday and I was fine). I wasn't drunk or on any drugs, I'd been drinking water and I felt fine before it happened. Any thoughts? Just lack of food?

Did you feel lightheaded before you fainted? I've got very low blood pressure and if I stand or sit still and then move I can sometimes pass out. It doesn't always happen straight away though, I usually get lightheaded first and then a few minutes later I actually faint.
The trick to it is if you're starting to feel lightheaded/dizzy sit down straight away and put your head between your knees. Or even lay down on the floor. The brain is basically not getting enough blood pumped through it ...

Heart rhythm disorder, sleep deprivation, low blood pressure (hypotension), atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, dehydration, exercise, heat exhaustion, chemical burns. That's the list I got when I put in feeling faint as your symptom in the webmd.com symptom tool.
If it happens once, maybe it was just some fluke. If it keeps happening, obviously we won't be able to tell you what's wrong, you'd need to be examined by your doctor.
Here's more information for you from the NHS: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Fainting/Pages/Causes.aspx
Take care!

Could be lack of food, could be heat (even a small change in temperature can cause you to faint). Watch your diet, and if you feel dizzy at all again, or faint again, then go to the doctor. If all you're having in the morning is toast, then it could be lack of food.

You might be anemic. I have a friend who will faint if she doesn't get enough iron. She has a daily vitamin supliment that she takes and doesn't usually have issues. It sounds very similar to what you've described here. I would consult a physician.
