Hi,

I'm 4 months pregnant. I'm thinking of going for a natural birth if my health is good at the time of delivery. But I have some serious concerns. Does the vagina change after a natural birth? Does it affect the sex life later on? Does the vagina become loose or something? If there are any changes, how big are this changes? Please help me clarify my doubts.

Thanks!

someone told me breast feeding makes things go back to normal quicker - think it was my midwife actually but anyhow, try that before worry, ing tis the natural way thus not likely to cause problems for ya and a super nice way to bond with your baby :)

Not necessarily, but possibly.

Our children were progressively larger. 8lbs. ish for the first, not quite 9 lbs. for the second, and 9lbs. 12 oz. for the third (and God willing last). And I'm sorry to say sex hasn't been the same since. Oh, the first minute or two are fine, but after that I can't feel much (btw, I'm the male half of the equation).

I would think that Kegel should be your mantra.

A female reader, Not My Name Australia +, writes (6 April 2010):

Not My Name agony auntI am presuming the general consensus will be that a vaginal birth does cause a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles causing a loss of tightness and tone, ... however maybe I am a freak or something, but I had the opposite occur.

My son was born early, and was very small at only 2.3 kg, but all the same I sustained quite a bit of tearing, inside, outside, umm eveywhere. So, I think my girly bits went 'HOLY SHIT' packed up shop and decided nothing was going in or out of there ever again lol.

I never did have sex with my ex again - his choice and his loss - coz my new man was blown away, rekons I feel like a virgin, and still now after being together 9 months he often comments with pleasure about how 'snug' things are down there. At first he thought I was nervous and tensing up, later having done it numerous times and nothing changing he decided I must be tensing on purpose (until I showed him the difference of what tensing on purpose felt like) but nope, it is just what happened to me after having a baby. Bonus lol!

As for problems, well, I would hardly call it a problem coz the sex life is great, but we did have to take it easy and space things out initially coz I'd feel like I had internal bruising for days at a time, but that may just have been coz I had been out of action for so long and he whilst avg in length is definately on the chunkier side of things, anyway, we got over that after half a dozen times, ... and we have caused very minor tears a handful of time (the last about a month ago) but it's not painful at all. I usually don't know it has happened until after we've finished.

Anyway, that's my backwards story of the after effects of having a baby. Guess everyone is different!

A female reader, Laura1318 Malaysia +, writes (6 April 2010):

Laura1318 agony auntThe vagina should go back to the original size after child birth.Your vagina would go back to normal about 6 weeks after giving birth!

Different women may experience different changes in their vagina. Some may find them tighter ,some looser, some the inner labia hangs out and some find them just different .
