Sperm don't die upon contact with air...I wouldn't hold up much hope for the survival of the human race if they did. There have been cases of women who have become pregnant without full intercourse as sperm have leaked at the exit.

No. Sperm doesn't die the second it hits air... It dies pretty much at the same time it dries up, which as mentioned below can be anything between 30 minutes to 4 hours.
I don't know if you're asking this question relating to any kind of situation you've been in, but you should just keep semen away from the vagina unless you're protected, no matter how long it's been in the air.
