The owner of the insurance card became quite cross and said she might not return to this office anymore. My boss mentioned her being the kind of person who talks about everything and that was the only problem.Today I got my paycheck and yesterday I had mentioned maybe buying a uniform. She payed me and said she didn't know about me buying a uniform as she wasn't sure how I felt about the office. That these days it has been calm but there are days there are a lot of patients and wasn't sure if I would feel it's too much for me to handle. She kept talking about how the office is very vulnerable and patients only see the bad things someone does.Does she want to fire me? I have no previous work experience and she said she liked me working there. That it's not to discourage me but to make me aware. I felt discouraged and don't think she wants me there anymore over the mistake I made.

I'm 18, not as lucky as I work in retail at a store and in my first two weeks of working - I messed up EVERYTHING. Gave customers wrong items, forgot to put items they purchased in their bags, returned items with the wrong tags, gave back too much money, could never use the employee phones... oh boy, it was a train wreck. My managers constantly had to correct my behavior. Now, after six months they consistently mention how I am one of their favorites as I do my job very well and know the place better than some of the long-term employees! You're going to get used to your job and your co-workers and managers will get used to you. This was also my first real job. You have to start somewhere and you chose to start with them - they should be proud of teaching someone young new experiences! Just try your very best to focus and get the hang of things around the office, and don't take the customers personally. If that woman was being cross towards you, ignore her attitude and as hard as it may be, tell her to "have a great one!" because your manager will have a better understanding to the situation. You gave the customer the wrong card, she was "irked", but you're new. It happens every day to so many people. When I am at stores with new employees, I always let them take their time because I was in their place, too! Don't let things like this get to you. First jobs are always difficult at first. Good luck!

if she wanted to fire you she would have...
relax... we all make mistakes early on
as for the person of the insurance card... relax the boss said clearly she's a whiner and a complainer.
continue to do your best
and when you make a mistake OWN IT and apologize and use it as a learning experience... you will find we expect folks to make mistakes and those that try to HIDE it are in worse shape than those that use it to learn.

OOh boy - just try to relax and not worry so much (though I can see why you would)and be extra careful in doing your work - plus, of course, if you are unsure of something don't be afraid to ask your boss! I'm sure she'd prefer you to ask her (or another more experienced coworker if there is one) than to make a mistake.
Pinktopaz has given you some excellent advice!
All the best!

She probably doesn't want to fire you, it's only your second week of work. She knows it's your first job and you're going to make some mistakes, but usually the first 90-days is a probation period, so she'll probably keep an eye on you to make sure you don't make too many mistakes or a really bad mistake. You're only human and it's a new job for you, you're going to make mistakes from time-to-time. Honestly, giving a patient back the wrong insurance card isn't that big of a deal (to me) and wouldn't lead to immediate termination, in my opinion. Just don't do it again.
As far as the uniform thing, she probably doesn't want to buy you a uniform and then have you quit in the next few weeks if she's a little worried that it might be too much for you when it gets busy. Working with the public is hard! There's a lot of personalities and people that get pissed off over nothing (especially at doctor's offices!).
