A male reader, anonymous, writes (10 October 2010):

a few people have said that it grows back darker or thicker, this is NOT true. It will stimulate the hairs to grow faster for a short period of time, but what happens is, at the end of the hairs you have now, it has been roughened up and gets thin at the tips, so it is softer and thinner, but if you shave clean, the new growth will appear thicker because it is not thin and rounded from rubbing, so instead it is flat and fatter, but the hair never gets thicker, if you let it grow, the tips of the hair will slowly get softer and rounder again, it just appears thicker and sharper because it's not had time to wear down. (like glass is sharp when you break it, but if you find class that has been in the ocean, it has smooth edges because it has been sanded down by rubbing against things in the ocean)

FluffyPie agony auntIf you shave it with a razor, it grows back darker and thicker, I know from my own experience. That's why I refrained from using it, because it cuts hair off from the skin.

That's why I now use wax, because the hair is ripped off with it's root, so it grows back slower, and in time it becomes thinner again. Basically it will start growing naturally, with its own root.

Emancipator agony auntI'm not an expert, but Fluffypie, thats a misconception, its an urban myth. Shaving hair of any kind doesnt make it grow back darker and thicker:

FluffyPie agony auntYes, regular shaving, with a classic razor, makes the hair grow back thicker and darker.
