 He might just care for you hun as a good friend, maybe he doesnt want to see you go for a boy he knows isnt good enough, my male friends are always over protective because they know what guys are like and they dont wana see me hurt.
or he might like you, which if he does then you have to consider wether you like him back or wether he is just a friend and if you feel he is just a friend then its best to hint him that he is just a friend, he might feel a little down about this but it would be better than stringing him along.
personally i thinks he is just being a really good friend though
