 Just because your friend knows you like him doesnt mean that he has to like you more than he likes her. Your first sentence makes it sound as if she is at fault somehow ....
ITs up to you to be more approachable if you are now shy, initiate converstation, they dont have to be about important stuff, ask simple questions that require more than a yes or no answer, even just speak up and greet him when you see him, "Hi Mike" might be all that it takes to get him to see you behind your wall of shyness.

 watch him out the corner of your eye he will usally look the girl he likes if its you ask him , if its your friend tell her and move on if its nobody he either likes nobody or dosent want to make it obvious who he likes. Also make friends with his friends that way if he tells them that he likes you they will tell u
