reader, anonymous, writes (19 August 2012): Sorry to get technical but there is something called the "major histocompatibility group complex.(mhgc)" It's got something to do with who you can accept a kidney transplant from. Anyway it's caused by genes and it affects your body's immune defenses. If there is too little diversity, that's bad for the immune system. You can't fight infections as well. The same is true if there is too much diversity. You can have too much or too little just like everything else. Well they have found that people are attracted to others more (I think it's by smell) if their mhgc is a close enough match but not too close. So sure, your cousin might be in love with you. And when cousins fall in love it's stronger than when anybody else falls in love. (Romeo and Juliet were faily close cousins.) Of course there is the question of whether first cousin is too close for other reasons, so here is a reference for you. It's also kind of technical, but young people are smarter every year and you'll probably enjoy it. Most people who read it decide that third or fourth cousin is ideal for having grandchildren. An Association between Kinship and Fertility of Human Couples Agnar Helgason et al.
