 nothing to be confused about, he's just a nice friendly guy.
Men that are interested in dating a particular woman will make it clear to them that they are interested.
If all he is doing is having a friendly conversation with you once or twice a year when he sees you at a family event, it means nothing serious and you have no need of confusion.

 You were a child of around 6 or eight when you first met him, and since then you have seen him only few times a year.
Have you considered the possibility he talks to you to be friendly, because it would be rude to ignore you, because he likes to make sure everybody feels at ease.
If there has been nothing else to indicate love, accept that he simply has a friendly, outgoing nature.
