I'm not sure what the laws are in Britain regarding job applications, but I should think that it would be confidential.
Only a doctor can make a diagnosis, though... I hate for anyone to suffer from depression, but there could be other causes. There may be something pysical, or it may be diet.
Go to a doctor because suffering all the time sucks a lot, you'll feel better if you get it checked out.

It could be a phase that you're going through, but if it gets worse and won't go away and others get worried about you then yes, you should see a doctor.
I don't think it will affect your job much, otherwise it might be seen as discrimination. There are many successful people with Bipolar - did you know that Stephen Fry and Russell Brand both have the condition? You could even become an agony aunt - you'd have the right experience to give some good answers!
