The best way to lose weight fast without changing one thing you eat is to Rethink Your Drink! k_c100 agony auntYou dont mention how much you weigh and your height - this would be helpful so I could give you better advice!

Basically if your BMI is over 30 then your doctor can help you lose weight. They may be able to prescribe you some tablets that you can take or they may have other options open to you - as in nutritionists, personal trainers, reduced cost gym memberships etc. However what they will tell you is the same as I am about to tell you - THERE IS NO FAST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT!

think about the time it has taken you to put on the weight - if it goes on slowly it is going to come off slowly. If you want a quick fix you are never going to find it, unless you want to starve yourself and die. Anorexia is absolutely not the way forwards, and anyway you cant make yourself anorexic it is an illness that these girls would give anything to get rid of so for you to say you are thinking about it would be a masssive insult to any anorexics out there.

If you are serious about losing weight and want to give 110% of your effort then read on. If not you are wasting your time and are destined to be overweight forever. Listen carefully.....

1. Eat less, exercise more. That is the simple rule to losing weight.

2. Expect to lose around 1-2lbs a week. This is a steady weight loss that is achieveable and wont be detrimental to your health. Any faster and your skin will go saggy, you will end up with health problems and it is more than likely that in a few months time you will put weight on. RAPID WEIGHT LOSS = RAPID WEIGHT GAIN!! it has been proven that people who lose weight rapidly are almost certainly going to put the weight on, and in most cases even more. Slowly and steadily is the way to do it if you want to keep the weight off forever. So no drastic diets, no silly fad-diets, just good old fashioned healthy eating and exercise.

3. Cut out junk food. This means all take-aways, pizzas, burgers, chinese food, curries etc. No cakes, buscuits, chocolate, pastry.....the list goes on. All these foods have no nutritional benefits to you - all they contain is fat and carbohydrates!

4. Cut out processed food as much as you can. So this means things like ham and other processed meats (frozen meat is the worse offender), ready meals (even if they claim to be low fat they are still pumped full of chemicals), sauces in jars....basically anything that has to be preserved shouldnt be eaten! Fresh food all the way!

5. Cut out white carbs - No more white bread, white rice, white pasta....etc. These are also processed and have no nutritional benefit, therefore you dont need to eat them! Swap these for the brown versions...brown bread, wholewheat pasta etc.

6. Cut your portion size. Take a good look at how much you are eating and see how big your portions really are. The only thing you can eat as much as you want of is fruit and veg!

7. Eat more in the morning and at lunch than for dinner. Lunch and breakfast can involve carbs and the portions can be bigger. This is because you use more calories during the day than you do at night when you are sat on your bum watching TV! So eat more earlier on and limit what you eat at night.

8. Stop snacking! Snacking is a dieter's worst nightmare, it is just unnessecary calories laden with fat. If you get hungry eat fruit or veg, have a 0% fat yoghurt, drink water (often hunger is mistaken for thirst).

9. Drink lots of water! Water flushes out toxins from the body, and also helps you to feel full. Try and drink as much as you possibly can (tea and coffee dont count though!)

10. Get active! Do any form of exercise you can, whether this is just walking or going out jogging, playing tennis, going to the gym, swimming....whatever you enjoy (or dont mind doing). You need to be exercising at least 3 times a week for around an hour to see any benenfit though. If you prefer, spread out the exercise so you are doing 30 minutes of excercise 6 times a week. But it only counts as exercise if your heart is beating faster than normal - so that you can feel it pumping and you get a little breathless. When you feel like that, you know you are in the cardio zone and it will be burning those calories!

11. Do weights! I always bang on about weights but they really are magical if you want to lose weight and keep it off! What they do is by increasing your muscle mass, you increase your base metabolic rate (the number of calories burnt when your body is at rest). Therefore if you have more muscle than fat, your body will burn calories just by sitting around doing nothing! So go to the gym if you can and spend a good half hour on some weights (for women who dont want to get bulky - low weights and high repitions will make you toned and not bulky!). If you cant get to the gym then buy some you can use at home (just the little hand held things work a treat) do 3-4 sessions a week. Believe me you will notice the tone within a month, and you will notice that even if you have a bad day with food, you wont put any weight on because the muscles burn those calories away!

12. If you can go to the gym - do weights first before cardio! This way you burn all the glycogen in your body whilst doing the weights so when you start your cardio, you burn the fat.

I see all these things as lifestyle changes as opposed to a diet, dieting sets you up to fail because if you go "on" a diet, at some point you will have to come "off" the diet and the weight will go back on. Whereas if you just try and eat healthily and exercise more, you can maintain this change without struggling.

I have made all of the above changes (with the exception of chocolate - I still eat 1 or 2 small snack size bars each day because it is the 1 thing I cannot give up!). I have lost a stone so far and it is staying off for the first time in my life! I go to the gym 3 times a week and just eat pretty healthily, and it seems to be working. It has taken me a while to get here (3 months) so it is no quick fix, and some weeks I havent lost a pound and it is frustrating. But at the end of the day I am losing weight, and when I fully stick to my plan (basically all the pointers I gave you above) I will always lose a couple of pounds in a week. It is just a battle with my willpower - I love my food so sometimes it is hard to resist a pizza or a little takeaway!

You need to be fully committed to lose weight, otherwise you will just fail and end up comfort eating again to take your mind off the fact you failed. Looking for a quick fix wont work - what will work is changing your life for good and never looking back. I hope what I have said helps in some way but remember, only you can do this. You have to want this and you are the only person that can make these changes! But if you do go for it then you will find life is so much better! You will have more confidence, your skin will be better, your hair will be better, you will feel fitter and healthier.....the list goes on!

Good luck!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (20 May 2009):

before you can even think about trying to change the way you look on the outside, you need to change how you feel on the inside, address your issues such as low confidence and depression, as slimming won't help this, infact even slimming the healthy way can make it worse. I've been "skinny" then "chunky" and am now "skinny" again (not on purpose though.) I was at my happiest when i was just chunky. when you start dieting, it's a slippery slope towards obsession, and the amount of weight you think will be enough to lose when you start off never is. You need to address your self confidence issues, and must realise that being slim, doesnt make anything better, it just changes your body shape. I'd recommend one of the paul mackenna programmes as it focuses on your ideas, and emotional attatchment to food, the idea is not to lose weight, but to change how you feel about yourself and food, the losing weight follows that.

Good luck.

They say it's not a good idea to lose weight too easily. You need to revise your eating habits so that when you do eat, it's the right things. May be worth joining a slimming club such as weight watchers.

Don't blame everything on your weight though; if you are feeling down try and pinpoint other problems in your life and think about how you are going to put them right.

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 May 2009):

I'm no dietician or fitness instructor, far from it, but I do know the saying 'you are what you eat'. The more you put into your mouth that doesn't get burned off by exercise will turn into more flesh and fat on your bones.

Think of your body as a bank account. You put money in, you take money out. Your balance increases because there's more going in than coming out. Likewise, it decreases if you take more out than you put in.

One thing I can tell you from experience is that if you lose it quickly you'll put it all back on again quickly -and then some.

Eat sensibly, exercise regularly, and when you've lost the weight don't be tempted by sticky buns, chocolates and bottles of Coca-Cola. Forget faddy diets - they seldom work in the long term. It's as simple as that.
