Does anybody else suffer from IBS?

This is more of a health question, I realise that, but I am really desperate. The thing is, I have irritable bowel syndrome. I was diagnosed when I was 18, and I'm now 23. I take an anti-spasmodic, which helps, but every so often I get bad "flare-ups". I am going through one now, and it's making me miserable.

The main symptoms I have are stomach cramps, diarrhea, and nausea. I'm not really asking for health advice, but I would love to know if there are any other people out there who have IBS. I just feel really alone with this right now. Nobody can seem to understand why I get so upset about this, but sometimes it feels like it is taking over and hindering my life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Try incorporating natural anti - inflammatories into your diet, green tea, curcumin and fish oil supplements can be helpful.

Have you tried oatmeal in the mornings? My doctor explained that IBS is like psriosis on the inside of your bowels and oatmeal helps to heal it. It worked for me, I very seldom have a flare-up and when I do I go back to eating oatmeal immediately.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has responded. The IBS was initially caused by stress. When I found out I had IBS, I completely changed my diet. I eat healthily and drink plenty of water, and it has helped me a lot.

But unfortunately, when it flares up, perhaps if I'm stressed, it can last for ages. I guess I do need to try and not let it take over. I may speak to my doctor about it again, and see if they can suggest anything else. I also didn't know IBS was so common! The links you all provided are also proving to be useful. I can see that I'm not alone with this. In fact, it seems that there are people out there who experience it worse than I do, so I guess I should be grateful that I can manage this most of the time.

Thank you again for your responses.

I would strongly recommend if you can afford it to see a specialist or contact a support group? http://www.theguttrust.org/

It is important that you understand more about your condition and how you can help yourself. Feeling more in control and sharing experiences with others will help your sense of isolation and frustration. Always get checked out professionally if you feel the symptoms change or worry you.

HereAreMyTwoCents agony auntI don't have IBS but I have mild interstitial cystitis. It's the bladder's equivalent of IBS. Have you made the recommended changes to your diet? Does it still bother you anyway? I will also recommend this link for you. I'm into alternative health and stuff like that. I'm not going to describe on this forum what the link is about, but click on it, it will speak for itself.

Denizen agony auntI think you should be discussing this with a health professional. Irritable bowel is fairly common and the causes are varied and numerous.

You need to identify the cause. Your GP will check it isn't something else like Crohns. He will refer you to someone for support if necessary.
