A lot depends on whether he said it before or after sex. If there was no sex that night, and he wasn't expecting any, or any other reward I'd say he meant it.

The world is full of people that say they love you for many reasons including, meaning it, thinking they mean it, and wanting to get in your knickers amongst others.
