DrPsych agony auntYou don't say how long it is since you had intercourse, but it is possible to get pregnant at any time of your cycle (more common when you are ovulating though mid-cycle). The advice of the first aunt is very good and you can get the morning after pill from a GP or pharmacist. It is most effective if taken within the first 24 hours, but can also be used up to 72 hours. However, if you are outside that time-frame the morning after pill will not be helpful. It is also not suitable for all women so be sure to remind your doctor/ chemist of any medical conditions. There is an alternative - you can have a coil fitted at a family planning clinic or by a nurse up to 5 days after intercourse. If this is too late, you should check for pregnancy as soon as you miss a period. If you are pregnant and do not wish to continue to full term there is a pill available from a doctor at an NHS hospital during early pregnancy to cause an abortion. However, this would be entirely a personal choice and it is not for me to recommend that you go down this route.

If in doubt, ALWAYS get the morning after pill.

It's free from the GP so why take the risk?

Good Luck!! xx

k_c100 agony auntHow long ago did you have unprotected sex?

The morning after pill only works if taken within 72 hours so you need to go to the doctors ASAP to get the morning after pill, or you can go to a sexual health clinic or a walk in clinic - search the NHS site for details of where you can get it from for free.

Basically if you have unprotected sex at ANY time during your cycle then you can get pregnant. You can get pregnant during your period, you can get pregnant a few days after your period, or a few days before. Regardless of the time of month there is always a chance you can get pregnant if you have unprotected sex. Yes during the middle of the cycle you are at your most fertile but it still doesnt mean that the rest of the month you are not fertile at all! As soon as your egg is released from your ovaries (which is at the start of your cycle) you can get pregnant - it is just harder for the sperm to reach it whilst it is still in the fallopian tubes, whereas in the middle of your cycle the sperm have an easier job of reaching the egg. But sperm can survive in your body for up to 3 days so pregnancy can occur at any time.

Get the morning after pill if you dont want to have a baby. Then please arrange to see a doctor for birth control and condoms - you will also need an STD test seen as you have had unprotected sex. Remember - pulling out before a man ejaculates is not a form of contraception (pre-cum contains sperm too) and neither is the morning after pill. Use birth control to stop unwanted pregnancies and use condoms to stop there being any chance of catching an STD.

I hope this helps and good luck!
