Your hymen does not get thicker with age and the chances are it may well have broken naturally anyway if your an active woman.
Your partner should be delighted to have met someone who so special :o)

To be honest, I have never encountered a 38-year-old virgin, but I strongly doubt that a hymen grows any thicker or stronger with age. You are still a very young woman, and this just seems an unjustifiable concern. You could consult with your gynecologist, but I think that you could avoid any such expense and simply proceed with lovemaking naturally. Best wishes . . .

I lost my virginity at 31, almost 2 years ago and yes penetration was difficult but I don't know if it was because of my high nervousness at the time, lack of adequate foreplay or because I wasn't that young. I heard of another female marrying into her thrities and needing like a shipping hammer to break her hymen on her honeymoon. But
I don't think you should waste the opportunity of experimenting the breakage of your himen because it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for every woman. I don't encourage premarital sex but I think your man will enjoy being the one who breaks your hymen. Men like virgins because it feels tighter you should know this already.
Anyway, I think you should definitely tell your boyfriend that you are a virgin because is something very important and if he is your boyfriend you should trust him. This is something he needs to know. You'll feel better if you tell him the truth. If you are too afraid to tell him it means your relationship is not strong enough for you to start having sex. You cannot share the truth but will share your body?
Also, I think you won't be able to hide the fact that you are inexperienced once you decide to have sex with him because sex is a very emotional experience. There are many lubricants in the market today and methods to make your first time a pleasant experience. The most important thing is that you are relaxed and in love with your partner.
