Do I let it ride until calmer minds prevail or ask for a discussion about it?

My boyfriend of one year is one of those people who loves to have the last word and makes remarks after which he swears he's just kidding but doesn't like it when you say them back to him. I am one of those people that won't always let you have the last word and will happily hand back your just kidding remarks when needed. This happened today when I said a kidding line that he had previously said. All of a sudden he yelled shut up! I was shocked. I answered permanently' and hung up the phone. Do I let it ride until calmer minds prevail or ask for a discussion about it? We always seem to get this way when we haven't been 'around' each other due to our busy schedules.

To FierceBadRabbit: Your egos assumption was exact. I'm all Irish and he's all Italian, and I have enough of those marriages, strong ones, in my family to know how they interact. Irish women and Italian men? The fighting and loving can go from 0-100 in about 0.2 seconds. Thank you so much for your help.
