i agree with hopeful with this one, there is that small chance that his just being nice as a friend but really i think his trying to send you hints that he likes you for you, if you like him maybe flirt a little and see what type of response you get.

To me that sounds like something you would say to a friend who you were interested in something else with.
They are really lovely comments and I think this is his hint to perhaps take something further.
However, he could have just been being friendly.
I think if you are interested too, give him a call and arrange a catch up - just the two of you - dinner or something and see where things lead.
They are comments which you don't hear a guy say those sorts of things often - it is fairly deep for just a platonic relationship
