My advice is to stop looking at players if you are looking for a long term relationship. You will only get your heart broken. Now, if you ARE just interested in one night stands and flings, then by all means go for the players. In other words, don't ruin the nice guys by playing them.

If we're NOT invoking "4 date" then we only persevere for the requisite 3 dates, after which we give up....

 A guy who is worth your time will not get tired and move on too quickly. Part of the question here is "how much time?" It's impossible to say... depends on the people involved. My gf and I in hs/college dated for three years and never had sex. My current girlfriend and I waited a few months. That's probably a bit unusual too but it felt right to us.
You should not let yourself feel pressured to have sex. If he's worth it, he'll be patient.
