I have a problem

I am 16 yrs old and I have been dieting for nearly 3 months now, but I haven't lost any weight whatsoever. Does anyone know if there are pills I can take or anything like that to help me lose my weight?

And my other concern is that I have a lot of hair on my stomach. Is it normal or will girls go off me because I have a hairy stomach?

Men are supposed to have hair. My love has hair on his stomach and I LOVE it. So don't worry about that, not all men are expected to be smooth as a baby's backside. Not all woman like that anyways.

There are people you can see that will better help you loses weight.

A good diet and excercise is always best.

Have you talked to your family doctor? Your family doctor is more capable of helping you and guiding you to a nutritionalist.

I'd start there.

No one is perfect. Not one body the most beautiful to behold. Not everyone can age with a muscular or slim build. The outer husk we call a body is just an enclosing that does not do justice to the inner beauty that is you.

Take care and I hope we helped you in this regard.

*hugs*

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (12 July 2006):

DrPsych agony auntGaining weight and developing hair where you might not normally expect it are symptoms of polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is a common disorder affecting about 10% of women and it often starts to show symptoms in the teen years. I am not saying you definitely have this but a simple blood test and ultrasound would diagnose the condition and you can get treatment for it (I have this condition). If you are bothered about excess hair then you can always have laser treatment when you are older to remove it. Don't take diet pills - they don't work! Instead, look at your lifestyle related to food intake and exercise regime, and get a medical check up just to exclude any medical reasons like the condition above, or an underactive thyroid (which also causes weight gain and hair growth).

Lisho agony auntFirst of all the hair on the belly is totally normal. so dnt stress over that.

I think that if u want to lose weight then you need to exercise and eat healthier rather dieting, becuse all you do by starving your body is encoureging it to hang on to the fat. Plus you can only burn the amount of calories you eat so if your eating little bits you aint going to burn much fat.

Eat little and often and avoit eating late at night. also drink lots of water because that wil help flush out your body.

if u feel peckish eat fruit its sweet and healthy

good luck

A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (12 July 2006):

Bev Conolly agony auntBe cautious of 'dieting'. At the age of sixteen, you should be putting on weight in the form of muscle mass, not losing weight.

If you feel that you have too much body fat, then the solution is to make your energy output greater than energy input, that is, to burn the fat. Hanniseds (below) is right. Exercise is the key to losing fat, not a pill. And not usually a diet, unless you're very sensible and simply cut back on fats and eat smaller portions.

The diet-fad community seesaws on what's "good" and what's "bad" all the time. In my lifetime, it's gone full-circle already! Once it was carbohydrates that were the enemy. Then meant, then eggs, then dairy, then the Atkins Diet was back again after 30 years... The fads change all the time, so the only practical way to reduce your fat is to exercise more.

Try running or weights, or both. Or give up driving and walk to school, work and your other appointments.

I'd suggest that you give up the dieting for the time being. Diets don't work in the long term, because as soon as you go back to what you were doing, you get fat again. Cut back the food and start working out instead.

Don't worry about the body hair, either. You can't do anything about your secondary sexual characteristics, like body hair and facial hair, so learn to love it. Most women like a man who *looks* like a man. Certainly, I think men with loads of body hair look great!

Try not to worry. I'm sure you're normal.

A female reader, hannieseds New Zealand +, writes (11 July 2006):

hannieseds agony auntHey there,

What kind of dieting are you doing? Are you following a healthy eating plan and not skipping meals? Are you doing an hour of exercise every day? If you are serious about losing weight, it is a slow and sometimes very annoying process, but you need to be exercising (burning off more than you are eating) in order to see the kilos drop off. Do not look for the answer in a pill. Taking a diet pill may very well help you lose a few kilos very quickly, but they will pile back on as soon as you stop taking them. The best way is to exercise an hour every day and eat well.

My BF has a hairy stomach and I think it is just so sexy! - very manly in my opinion! Men are generally quite hairy so don't worry at all about this, as it is completely normal. There are men out there who have their whole backs and chests and stomachs covered in thick, dark hair, and there is nothing abnormal about them, its just your genetic make-up. So don't worry yourself, I can only speak for myself, but I think it's damn sexy! xxx
