I figured I started my period... so I got a pad and stuff but when I went to the bathroom there wasn't any blood in the toilet... did I really start my period? If not then what was it??

Yes most likely you have but when you first start it can be few and far between. Just be prepared, have plenty of towels/tampons and some pain medication. You will start to bleed heavier and more often but don't worry it's natural. You may get cramps but hot baths/hot water bottles and exercise can also help the pain.
