writes:Hi, i am just wondering what to do, I am startng on the pill and i misheard the doctor and took the first pill on saturday even though im not due my period until wednesday. I only took one of the pills becase i discovered i wasnt supposed to start until the first day of period. What do i do now? Will i get my period as normal on wednesday seeing as I only took one o the pills its yasmi by the way, thanks!

taking one pill shouldn't affect you. just remember to take them as soon as you start on your period. if you have gone on the pill as you intend to have unprotected sex it can take at least 10 days before the pill can take full affect so continue to be careful for at least another couple of weeks. xx

The reason that women (in the UK) are advised to start taking the pill on the 1st day of their period is because the arrival of a period is a relatively clear indicator that the woman isn't already pregnant. (The pill shouldn't be taken during pregnancy)It's unusual to do it this way but the pill can be started at any time during the cycle provided pregnancy can be reliably excluded. So you haven't harmed yourself in anyway.I'm not sure how to advise you as I'm not 100% sure how taking one pill early may affect your period. This site isn't really geared up for medical questions so most of the aunties will advise you to seek help from a professional.It's a simple query though and you should be able to get the answers you need over the phone rather than having to make another appointment. Call your GP's surgery and leave a message for the GP to call you back or call the chemist where you picked the pills up from and ask to speak to the pharmacist for advice. Failing that your local family planning clinic or NHS direct can help.Also read the leaflet inside the box carefully. The answer may be in there
