Could losing your virginity kick start your period?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hello all,

I lost my virginity a few days ago to my boyfriend of 2 years (yes, we used protection), and it all went quite well. I felt no pain and had no bleeding the actual night we had sex, but the day after (yesterday) I had a fair amount of bleeding which has continued today. It's pretty much the same amount of blood as if I was on my period, and I have slight cramping as if I were on my period. Is this normal? Is this just usual blood from losing your virginity or can this kind of kick-start your period?

Thanks all your answers!

ALright, thank you both for your help! I feel fine, so I'm not going to worry about it, but if maybe if it happens again I head to the doctor.

chigirl agony auntIt probably was triggered by you having sex for the first time, yes. Hormones do crazy things to your body. Just like when if you are stressed you can get your period, it wouldn't surprise me that the sudden change to your body (having something inserted where nothing's been before) could cause a reaction in your body. Some experience belly aches, some just a light bleeding from the actual breaking of the hymen (just a few drops), and apparently some get a middle-period (I say middle since it's between two original periods).

Taking hormonal birth control pills can give you these middle-bleedings as well, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's hormonal. It likely is not because of the breaking of your hymen or anything of that nature.

Ok, so my period just started. Again. This is about when it should be though. Was all that blood a few weeks ago really just from losing my virginity? I bled for a good 2-3 days.

chigirl agony auntCramps in your belly can happen after having sex for the first times. I don't think your period can come from losing your virginity directly, but your period and your general health are deeply connected. If you are stressed for example, you can get your period or lose your period. If you are sick the same thing can happen. It wouldn't surprise me that your body's reaction to sex could be to get your period, while this isn't standard for all women.

The bleeding from losing your virginity should only be a few drops, and shouldn't last for days.

If you don't stop bleeding soon I think you should visit your doctor to check that you are ok.
