Could it lead to a custody battle if I let my Turkish friend know I was pregnant by him?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm nearly 20 and having a baby that is the result of a one night stand with a turkish boy the same age as me whilst I was on holiday. We used a condom but it must have split. The only way I have of contacting him is facebook, although I haven't spoken to him since the holiday. I know I have to tell him because it's not fair on him or my baby. To be honest selfishly I don't want to tell him because I don't really want him or his family to be involved and I'm not going to ask for any support from him. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea what his rights are? Are his rights different because he lives in Turkey and I live in England? Could this lead to a custody battle if him or his family wants to be involved and want they baby in Turkey.... if they did they wouldn't be likely to win would they?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 January 2009):

Think carefully before telling him, especially as you say, it is against your instincts. You two had no 'relationship' as such and bringing this to him and his family may only cause more heartache.

It's very brave and very mature to decide you will bring up a baby entirely by yourself, but if it means that the baby then enjoys a more solid and reliable life emotionally, then it is the right decision.

A female reader, dizzikat United Kingdom +, writes (15 January 2009):

I'm not a legal expert but I would guess that if your baby is born in the uk, the uk parental rights laws would apply ie he has to go to register the birth with you to have parental rights. He could of course apply for parental rights at a later date it's not a once only deal.
