A female Canada age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Today I went and ate at a buffet restraunt with my family and friends. While I was eatting I bit my tougue by mistake and blood was coming out. It looks a bit puffy now. Since I bit my tougue, could I be expose to any diseases since this took place at a restraunt, and I was using their utensils that they gave me? When I got home all of a sudden I felt tired, exhausted, and have a headache. Could this be a sign that I got contacted with a HIV virus by using the restraunts utensils, and by biting my tougue? Help please! Thanks.

deejuliet agony auntNo, as everyone else has said, you cant contract HIV from biting your tongue and eating in a restraunt. Stina put it all very well so I wont repeat it. But lets just pretend for half a second that you could/did. You would not be sick from it within a matter of hours. HIV is a condition that takes years to develope and affect you! It, in fact, does not make you ill at all! It makes you susseptable to becoming ill. HIV stands for human immunodeficiancy virus. It attacts your immune system so that you are not able to fight off diseases. You really need to get some education.

What you have got to remember is that you can't get HIV unless you transmit another person's (who's got HIV) blood into your own body so the answer to your question is no, not unless there was blood on the utensils that you used at the restaurant and you got it on your hands and then licked your fingers. This is assuming that the blood contains HIV. Also you don't get symptoms for HIV ages after you catch the STI. This is the reason why many people who have the disease don't know that they have got it for years after catching it. Also the doctor can't work out if you have it until a month after you get it as it takes that long for the HIV to have an affect on the body.

A female reader, stina United States +, writes (18 July 2007):

stina agony auntHi there Anonymous,

We seem to have gotten a number of questions from you about contracting HIV and other stds from contact with various items ranging from lotions to utensils. I think you're worrying too much about this.

And why in the world would you have gone to a restaurant if you thought there was a chance you were eating with contaminated utensils? One doesn't typically think "Oh, I've contracted HIV" after they bite their tongue at a restaurant. There has to be a reason for you to come to this conclusion. Was it, in fact, a dirty restaurant? Or did one of your friends just diagnosed with HIV or AIDS? Did one of your friends tell you that you might have HIV now?

And, just a thought, but wouldn't it make sense that if you ate contaminated food or ate with contaminated utensils that you'd contract the disease anyway? It's entering your body, whether you've got a cut or not.

I think that you need to schedule an appointment with your doctor so you can learn how people contract stds (HIV/AIDS in particular). I think you should also get tested to ease your mind. Like I said, I think you're worrying over nothing, but it's because you need to be educated.

Take care.

kenny agony auntI don't think that it would have been possible for you to have picked up HIV from a resturant, Unless the utensils you were using had someone elses blood on them, which is unlikely.

You just bit your tounge we all do that from time to time. I think you are letting your mind run away with you here, in a day or 2 your tounge swelling will go down and you will forget all about it.

howcomehoney agony auntI very much doubt it. The chances are minimal, unless someone with HIV happened to be bleeding into your mouth at the second that you bit your tongue. If you were just eating, don't worry. Your tongue is puffy because it swelled up from the pain - it'll go down in a few days. If this really worries you, see a doctor and get tested, but honestly I don't think there's a risk.

YummyMummy agony auntHIV doesn't kick in that quick. I don't think anyway.

Your tongue is possibly puffy from where you bit it as it is quite sensitive. I would go and see the doctor and see what they say if you are really worried.
