If there's nothing else that you can think of that's making you feel down then I think you're right about the reason you're depressed. Although it's tremendously exciting to go off travelling, it's also kind of scary to be away from everything you're familiar with. It's not surprising you feel anxious about being away from the people you love and enjoy being with. Six months seems like a very long time, but the time will go very quickly. Talk to other people who've been off travelling and you'll find they've felt the same before they go. If you have worries about particular things then ask people about them. Of course nobody will forget about you while you're gone! I have two children who have been off travelling in gap years and they are even closer to their friends. You can email from internet cafes to keep in touch and arrange with your parents to reverse charge a phone call to them every now and then. Part of the reason to do this is for you to experience independence and it's stressful in many ways even though it's exciting. Try to focus on what you'll be doing while you're there and how brilliant it will be when you get back to tell everyone about your adventures. I guarantee you'll enjoy yourself so much that you'll hardly think about friends and family! Honestly. Have a wonderful time.
