Basically there are a few options you can do a monologue on your feelings (I am assuming that neither of you want that); you can talk about things or events; or you can talk about ideas.

If you guys were able of having an idea conversation you'd probably be doing it. So that leave things and events- ideally that you both have some knowledge on or it will be pretty one sided.

Why not plan a day trip together? You both could come back with ideas on places to go- maybe there is an airshow in town, or a "ghost tour" of the old part of the city. You can plan a hockey game and research restaurants to go to. Maybe just hike and take in the changing leaves.

This kind of weekend trip planning gives tons of conversation topics. Maybe you find out he likes barbecue and French restaurants. Maybe he used to do nature photographs in college and might want to pick it up again. Maybe you find out his childhood team is the Bruins and they are going to be in town.

Relax...you're doing just fine. Do you ask how his day was? funny thing happened today...I did this today...someday I'd like to do/try this...pets...likes/dislikes of job...goal for myself to do...what hobbies is he interested in? politics (maybe skip-ha) volunteer anywhere? church? Good food/restaurants, travel... I love to do this...then just let it flow

Hope this helps some :)
