writes: Hi my problem is with my dad he has lost his job again just like he did when he worked down the mines.Yet this time mum says he seems happier, he keeps saying to folks you 'reap what you sow'. What does he mean.

Reap what you sow has always meant to me "you get what you give". So if I give %100 effort in something I would expect to get good results, but it can be said with anything, like eyeswideopen says above, love, pain, happineess etc.

reader, anonymous, writes (15 October 2008): Yes he's probably refering to 1984 when some of the miners went on strike to save their jobs. This was during Margaret Thatchers reign as PM. It was the start of Capitalism with a capital C. and a general greed is good attitude.Although the miners industry was subsidised the government at the time thought it better to make thousand redundant and pay them benefits instead. This resulted in many families and communities breaking up and being dispearsed. Communities where a unrully teenager would be told i'll tell your dad, suddenly became estates of strangers and one parent families.Your family is lucky to have survived.I guess the current recession is your dads way of seeing capitalism to get whats due.Ironic that it's now banks being subsidised.Hope he finds work soon.Good luck

reader, anonymous, writes (15 October 2008): Difficult to say in his situation and with so little information, but it generally means that if you put a lot of effort into something you'll get a lot of benefit out of it. Whereas if you don't make any effort in life at all you'll get nothing out of life.
