Contraception for an Epileptic?

Tagged as: Health<< Previous question   Next question >>
Question - (30 November 2008) 2 Answers - (Newest, 11 December 2008)
A female Ireland age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Hi, I have previously been on the contraceptive pill. I came off that maybe 2 years ago due to been diagnosed with epilepsy. I stopped taking it as it was making my mood low and it just wasn't agreeing with me. Since then my husband and I have been relying on male condoms as a method of contraception. But honestly I try to avoid sexual intercourse most of the time due to worry in case the condom might split. Can anyone advise what is the safest and most reliable method of contraception for an epileptic to use as I'm definitely not ready to start a family?

Danielepew agony auntI agree with Gina. However, I think I understand your concern: you would prefer not to use anything that will get into your system. Diaphragms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaphragm_(contraceptive)) could be useful in your case. No method is 100% effective, but I guess that two barrier methods should give you reasonable protection.

Maybe you can also use one of the calendar methods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar-based_methods). Again, they are not perfect (and have a high failure rate anyways), but, if you combine them with condoms, or with a diaphragm, I guess that all together would make your chances of pregnancy much lower.

Using these methods you wouldn't be taking anything by mouth. Maybe you can ask your doctor whether other methods, such as the injections, would have an effect on you.

I also believe you should tell your husband that you are avoiding sex because you don't want to have children, and not because you're avoiding him.
